Frederick Douglass was a social activist when it wasn't popular. There is something to be said of a male negro slave coming of age and becoming the voice of abolition. He is known for his oratory and literary skills, and provided counter arguments to mainstream perception on slaves intellectual capacity, and women's ability to participate in government. He agitated America's conscience. When a young black male once asked him for advice on activism, his response was: Agitate!
